History
Seals Swimming Club – Established in 1907

The Seals Swimming club as been fortunate since 1907 to have a number of individuals that have served the club very well. It always takes one or two people to provide the motivation to succeed.

Pietermaritzburg therefore, has reaped the rewards of these individuals and the result is the newly revamped GC Jolliffe Swimming Pool.

The GC Jolliffe Pool was built to cater for the public on the Prestbury side of the city and the Seals Club used the pool a few decades ago before utilizing the Alexandra Baths in Alexandra Park. In 1989, Seals employed the services of professional coach Wayne Riddin when still making use of the heated Buchanan Street Baths in the winter.

After a shortage of space for the growing squads, it was decided to invest the profits of the Midmar Mile in heating the Scottsville Primary School pool in 1990, a 12.5m x 25m pool. After only three years, again space became a problem. Due to increased Midmar Mile profits, the next move was to the Alexandra High School pool and a 25m x 25m pool.

The club remained at this venue taking full responsibility of the running costs of the pool and the heating costs. Seals enjoyed many years of success training from this base until the idea of taking over the GC Jolliffe Pool materialized after six years of proposals.

So, in 2000, the move to the GC Jolliffe Pool happened and Seals invested R2.5 million in revamping the pool. The pool was tiled, as well as having the level raised and overflow channels built. A learn-to-swim and a pubic pool were also built.

The ultimate goal was always to end up with an indoor centre with a fully equipped gym/weight section to improve our standards of both the facilities and coaching. It took another three years to reach this goal and the result is the present situation at the GC Jolliffe Pool.

Under the guidance of Wayne Riddin, Seals has also expanded with a branch in Durban.

Pietermaritzburg is fortunate to have some of the countries leading high schools, making it a perfect place for potential swimmers to get a good education while competing. Can you afford not to be apart of this High Performance club?
